Gambling is one of the most popular hobbies, both online and in our physical world. There are so many ways of gambling that even the church is a proud agent of this pastime. Yet, gambling can become a threat to mental stability and health, leaving a wake of economic and social catastrophes in its wake.

Uncontrollable gambling addiction, known as compulsive gambling, is one of the rarest disorders that still baffles scientists. According to Mental Health.org, it is difficult to establish the causes of this mental illness, even though the impact on society is profound.

What is Gambling Addiction

Any cherished hobby can become a problematic addiction, and gambling is no exception. Most experts, doctors, and scientists argue that frequent gambling should not be classified as a problem. Since people may use their free time to visit casinos or play from a mobile app, it may become a daily practice.

Gambling addiction is an uncontrollable betting habit that causes the individual to ignore other responsibilities, especially financial ones. The problem may be impulse changes in behavioral patterns and personal care.

In the US, there are an estimated 560,000 persons that are affected by impulsive gambling.

Symptoms of Gambling Addiction

Whether it is a middle age adult female pulling away at the slot machine, or a young adult playing on his smartphone during work hours, it is addiction. There are three immediate impacts of impulsive gambling.

  1. The player spends more than his available budget, ignoring all other commitments.
  2. The individual gamble during regulated times such as study, work, medical visits, or scheduled meetings
  3. The person is anxious to get back to his gambling device of place
  4. Discard commits to being able to focus on his habit
  5. The gambler resorts to extreme methods to fund his addiction. This may include selling valuables, borrowing money, begging for money, and eventually stealing.
  6. The addict displays behavioral changes in personal hygiene, responsibility, demeanor, or family setting.
  7. The player begins to hide, lie about, and defend his gambling activities.
  8. When faced with challenges or problems, the individual resorts to gambling to solve them.

What are the possible causes of Impulsive Gambling

Although scientists are yet to fully explain or discover how exactly impulsive gambling is developed in mind, they do point to elements that may trigger it.

Role Play -Children Live What They Learn: Some addicts were born in a family where one or both parents gambled. Others were born in bookmakers’ homes. So by the time they are old enough, they are addicts.

Follow the Leader: Sometimes, friends can lead us astray. Some gamblers were guided into the habit by friends or relatives from an early age.

Peer Pressure: Others join the gambling grill because of social pressure.  The idea of being socially pushed to gamble.

Personality Trait: Does that mean that there is a type of people who are impulsive gamblers? Not exactly, but a strong impulsive character can lead to impulsive reactions and habits.

Secondary Drug Effect: Although unfortunate, scientists believe that gambling addiction may be caused by other drugs. Medications for illnesses such as Parkinson’s may have secondary effects that lead to impulsive addictions, including gambling.

What Is Special About Gambling?

Gambling was created to remove boredom.  A short, unintrusive, and harmless practice that would keep us happy during our leisure. For example, the playing cards as we know them were invented for the US army during the World War to help soldiers during their spare time.

The deck is now more popular than the original 20 cards French deck created during the 19th century to provide leisure to maritime Frenchmen in New Orleans, Cards are now synonymous with casinos such as online-betting.ph.

Gambling does not require any physical exercise but can create the same adrenalin rush found in a football touchdown.  It is a specie thing. Humans crave that few seconds of emotional climax when we feel on top of the peak of success.

The tingling of the slot machine as the coins roll down and cling against the pan; the glorious tones of that Yes! When the team scores and you win. And without sweating.

Social Impact of Negative Gambling

Negative gambling occurs when the addiction begins to deplete resources and destroy relationships. The main fabrics of society become endangered as the habit spins out of control.

  • Homes are placed in economic peril as the gambling addiction swallows all income earned by the player, abandoning family commitments. Financial obligations, such as mortgages, rent, tuition, and even food, become affected.
  • Work is next in line. Sooner or later, the worker begins to take his habit to work. This may lead to negligence and his eventual dismissal or demotion.
  • The community is now the next target. It becomes the target of financial milking as the individual now begs, borrows, or steals to continue his impulsive gambling habit.

Gambling is expected to keep increasing its revenues as the US passes new legislation and more states legalize online betting and sports wagering.

How Does Gambling Affect Mental Health?

Legal wagering will mean more players and more addicts. Even though eliminating gambling would not eliminate the problem. They would just find another source for adrenalin. This is where the truth becomes a crossroads.

We know that impulsive gambling may cause depression, stress, panic attack, low self-esteem, and anxiety.  People may turn to illicit side gigs, such as trafficking, to finance their new pastime. This will transform another community into a drug center.

The cycle will continue. Gambling, addictions, drugs, and prostitution.

Gambling is a passionate pastime that has transformed into a multi-billion industry. As they expand their market, the need for more centers to deal with impulsive gambling will also grow. The solution is nowhere close, and entertainment is the current bypass.

People play casinos, bingos, sportsbooks, racebooks, poker, and social casinos. It can be the quickest way to an adrenaline rush during their leisure time. On the other hand, it can become the gateway to impulsive gambling and financial demise. The choice is yours.
